NCNR is proud of our exemplary volunteer program. These dedicated individuals are truly an integral part of our team, or more appropriately said, our family. Our volunteers range in age from 12 to 85+ years old, each generation bringing with them their own unique gifts and talents.
If we might brag a little, NCNR volunteers have been selected for numerous awards for volunteerism on a local, district and state level. This past year, a young man who has volunteered here for seven years was selected as “Volunteer of the Year” in the Young Adult category for not only district, but for all of New York State! This is certainly not the first time our volunteers were recognized on the state level nor will it be the last. We are exceptional and we have the record to prove it.
So what exactly can you do as a volunteer? That’s a loaded question because the options are endless depending on your personality, talents, and comfort level. The following is just a brief list of what some of our volunteers do: Run the gift shop, run a small card group, one-to-one resident computer lessons, assist at bingo or a wii program, read the newspaper to a resident, bring a resident outside on the patio, deliver the mail, help wheel a resident to and from an activity program, play an instrument, sing, or simply sit, listen and be a friend.
The Therapeutic Recreation section of the NCNR website displays the monthly activity calendars which clearly show the variety of activities offered throughout the day and evening, seven days a week. Of note, the calendar that reads, “special events in special care” is designed for our dementia unit.
